What to Look For in a New Computer Monitor

If you are looking for a new computer monitor, there are many things that you should consider before buying. Different types of monitors work better for different budgets and lifestyles. You don’t want to end up getting a monitor that doesn’t fit your needs. Although most computer systems come with a monitor, you can always purchase one separately from the store. Even the monitors that come with the rest system, there are still many different types and specifications. It is common for people who are building their own computers to buy separate monitors.

What to Look For in a New Computer Monitor

The first thing you will want to consider is the screen size. It is always better to have a larger screen, but this is usually more expensive. The average screen size is 19 inches, but you can find them at 21 or 23 inches as well. Remember that a larger screen size will help you manage your applications easier and give you more room to view multiple documents. If you like to watch movies on your computer you may want to have a larger screen size just for convince.

After you choose a size you will have to decide whether you want a CRT or a LCD screen. A CRT monitor is much larger and heavier than an LCD monitor. They are made from cathode ray tubes like older television screens. An LCD screen is made from liquid crystals and can be extremely light, thin, and convenient. If you can afford to get an LCD screen it is usually more helpful, but the older types of monitors work just as well for desktop purposes. Of course, if you are going to be moving the computer around a lot it still may be worth the investment to get a laptop computer with an LCD screen.

Response time is the biggest factor for many gamers. This is the time it takes for your screen to update its images. If you have a low response time of 2ms you will not have to endure blurs or skipping screens. A higher response time will become frustrating if you are trying to play a game. Response times are recorded in milliseconds and are listed on the specifications for your monitor on its box.

Contrast ratio is another factor that many people don’t understand. It only affects people who work with colors, and want to see the difference between shades. A higher ratio like 1400:1 will allow you to see more shades of color. This is a very important factor for graphic editors, although it is not as important for the average user. It is better, however, to choose the higher rating contrast ratio if it has a good price compared to others.
Now that you know a little bit more about monitors you can go pick one out for yourself. It can be difficult to find one that is right for you and your budget, but just keep in mind the factors mentioned above before making your choice.
